Exploring Bowman’s one of many gorgeous Sanibel Beaches, you will experience expansive white sands and turquoise water. In addition to its great natural beauty, Bowman’s Beach is a treasure trove for beachcombers searching for shells. Low or high tide, this beach has some of the best shelling Sanibel Island has to offer. 

A major upside to this sandy sanctuary is that it has the most parking on all the beaches! The parking is a short walk, about a quarter mile to the beach, make sure you have your shoes on. If you have a lot of things, you may want to consider a cart!

The amenities are amazing and include restrooms, showers, charcoal grills, picnic tables, bike racks, hiking trails, a fitness station, and a playground! Bowman’s is very well maintained, all of the amenities are wonderfully clean as well as the beaches being beautifully kept. 

This is a great spot to see wildlife! Often spotted amongst this Sanibel Beach’s beauty are Shorebirds, Osprey, Manatees, and much more! There are some lovely beach plants such as sea oats, dune sunflowers, and sea lavender.

Bowmans is one of the best Sanibel Beaches for water sports, there is a kayak launch here that you can use to take a self-guided tour of the back bay! The beach is wide so whilst it is very popular, there is space to spread out.

Blind Pass Beach sanibel island

Intimate and relaxing, Blind Pass Beach has the unique advantage of both the gulf side and bayside. This distinctive quality unquestionably opens up Blind Pass to many of Sanibel Beaches’ best activities. 

Blind Plass is fairly secluded, making parking here one of the more difficult tasks. Spots are quite limited so it is best to get there early in the morning or early evening as well.  

On the bayside, there is wildlife in abundance including manatee sightings! Wading out to the sandbars you may find some sand dollars at your feet! Simultaneously the gulf side can cater to a plethora of water sports including windsurfing and kiteboarding. 

Amongst the many activities, Blind Pass has to offer, both Shelling and Fishing are excellent! For avid shellers, the shelling is second to none with the opportunity to find many beautiful keepsakes taken in from both the gulf and bayside! Blind Pass’ common catches are Tailing Redfish and Snook making it a popular spot for fishing. 

Blind Pass amenities consist of bike racks, picnic tables, and restrooms found on the Captiva side. Parking is extremely limited so it’s best to arrive as early as possible in order to ensure a space!

Blind Pass is conveniently located near the Santiva General Store and some great local restaurants such as The Mad Hatter and laid-back, local favorite, The Lazy Flamingo.

#3 Lighthouse Beach Park

Lighthouse Beach Park is a wonderful spot for so many things – fishing, shelling, wading in the warm water, kayaking, and more. 

When visiting be sure to come early because even though there are a lot of parking spaces, the lot fills up quickly! There are 170 spots and 5 handicap spots. 

Shelling is one of Lighthouse Beaches’ main attractions. With so many shells scattered along the shore, look out for Whelks and Cockles, you may even find a rare Junonia! Lighthouse Beach Park is also a great place to see wildlife such as Osprey and Gopher Turtles. 

There are great views of Fort Myers Beach and on a clear day even Naples! It is also one of the few places you can catch both the sunset and sunrise! 

One of our favorite things to do is take a sunset stroll along the Light House Beach shores. This location is perfect for a relaxing walk wading in the waters. The views are unbeatable with the beautiful lighthouse adding some character to any photograph.

Not to be missed is, of course, the historic lighthouse itself. Find out its fascinating history.

#4 Gulfside City Park/Algiers Beach

Gulfside City Park or, Algiers Beach, as it is known to the locals is a picturesque beach tucked away off Casa Ybel Road. This Sanibel Beach is a Shelling fanatics’ hidden gem, arrive at low tide to find the best shells!

Parking is fairly limited and is located about 100 yards from the beach, as the shorefront is not developed there tends to be less foot traffic. 

Gulfside City Park Beach proves to be just as good for shelling as some of Sanibel’s more crowded beaches. Wade a few feet into the water to discover sand dollars and clams!

Some of the amenities here are charcoal grills, picnic tables, outdoor showers, and restrooms available. Close by is the historic Perry Tract and, in fact, Gulfside has a fascinating history itself. 

In the 1950s a couple built an extremely unconventional home on the beach, find out all about it.

Tarpon Bay Beach on Sanibel Island

Tarpon Bay Beach is one of the better Sanibel Island beaches for shelling and is also great for swimming. It is centrally located which makes it incredibly convenient.

One of Tarpon Bays’ best activities is the Kayak Tour, you can choose to take a self-guided trip, or have a local Sanibel expert guide tag along! Explore the Mangroves and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife such as Manatees and Dolphins!

This Sanibel Beach has generous amenities such as restrooms, showers, and picnic areas. Tarpon Bay Beach is a short walk from plentiful parking including parking for recreational vehicles. At the beach entrance, there are 3 complimentary handicap parking spots. 

Tarpon Bay is one of the better beaches to visit if you’re looking to grab a bite as well. Close by are numerous excellent restaurants such as George And Wendy’s Seafood Grille, Spoondrift Island Bowls, and, the Over Easy Cafe

Also, close by is Bailey’s General Store which has everything you need for a day at the beach. Bailey’s is not only great for all your general needs, but it also has a long and fascinating history.

#6 Alison Hagerup Beach

Alison Hagerup Beach is a wide sandy beach located adjacent to the private South Seas Island Resort. What it lacks in amenities it makes up for in great natural beauty and rich history. 

As it is West facing, it is an excellent beach to watch the sunset, the views are always breathtaking. There are frequent dolphin sightings and this is also considered Captiva’s most romantic beach. 

A remarkable public servant, Alison Hagerup worked for the Captiva Erosion Prevention District for 20 years. She was instrumental in lobbying for beach re-nourishment projects and was known as a strong advocate for the preservation of the beaches. 

Her work is responsible for much of the Islands’ beauty. Sadly, she passed away in 2008 however her spirit lives on through the amazing beaches. 

Once you leave the beach you can make a stop at the nearby historical Captiva Cemetery to pay your respects to Alison. You can easily spot her marker which is surrounded by shells placed by her friends and family in her remembrance.

When you explore Turner Beach, you will discover a shelling and fishing paradise with a rock jetty that projects out into the beautiful, clear water. 

Though there is ample space for swimming, the currents can be stronger than on the Island’s other beaches. Subsequently, it pays to be cautious. 

One of Turner Beaches’ best activities is Shelling, there are numerous shells so be sure to wear shoes when exploring. This area also provides an ample landscape for water sports such as kayaking, fishing and other activities. 

Whilst searching for shells be sure to keep a look out into the water as there is some beautiful wildlife to be spotted and even dolphin sightings are common! There are also a wide variety of birds to be spotted, many pelicans.

When visiting Turner beach it is best to arrive early! There is limited parking but, there are restrooms, outdoor showers, and a few handicapped parking spaces. 

Turner Beach is close to the Santiva General Store, and local restaurants such as The Mad Hatter, the Sunset Grill, and The Lazy Flamingo.

#8 Silver Key Beach

One of Sanibel’s lesser-known spots is Silver Key Beach, best if you’re looking for solitude and sunshine! If you walk far enough, Bowman’s Beach turns into Silver Key Beach. 

The Silver Key preserve was bought by the City of Sanibel as a preservation effort in 1994. This preserve is home to birds, sea turtles, a variety of amphibians, and more! Many of Sanibel’s native species reside here as it was preserved in an effort to protect endangered species.

This very quiet and peaceful beach has no amenities but, is within walking distance to the Santiva General Store and, The Lazy Flamingo

In order to access this beach start by visiting Bowman’s Beach or Blind Pass, from here you will be able to walk to Silver Key. It is quite a long way to get there, but if you crave solace and privacy, this is the spot for you!

The Sanibel Causeway is a great place if you just want to pull up your car and run into the ocean. There are 2 stretches of beach to go to, and the water is easily accessible! 

This spot is a local favorite for a simple sunset or a fun filled day of activities and beach hang-outs. Just the view of passing from island to island makes for a fond memory. Park your car and chill out, watching the waves and spending time with friends and family.

Most notable, the Causeway beaches are the ONLY beaches that don’t charge for parking! Vehicles are able to cross over the bridge and choose a spot along the shoreline! Making this a very spacious and easy spot for a quick trip to paradise.  

Great location for paddle boarding, Kayaks, and windsurfing! With the shore’s of Sanibel steps away from your car it’s easy as ever to get straight into your activity for the day.

Take a trip to Useppa Island and experience this serene, beautiful piece of land that has played a significant role in the nation’s history. 

By the 1990’s, Useppa had become a desirable luxury retreat for politicians and celebrities. People of note took refuge on the island. 

Today the island is still privately owned, the only way to access this hidden gem is by boat! 

Upon arrival at Useppa Island you will be welcomed by wonderful views, historic architecture, and a waterfront restaurant where you can enjoy lunch! To delve into the islands history visit the Barbara L. Sumwalt Museum

Useppa Island is home to Private Beaches which are not accessible by the public.

Can You Fish on Sanibel & Captiva Beaches?

Fishing is incredibly popular on Sanibel and Captiva Island. Anyone of any skill level will have a chance to explore 15 miles of amazing shoreline. 

You will need a fishing license Apply Here. Sanibel Island and Captiva Island are strict about regulating fishing and there are inspectors frequently traveling throughout the fishing areas. 

There are a wide variety of ways to fish on the Islands. The three most common fishing techniques are Surf fishing, Kayak fishing, and Fly fishing. 

No matter what time of year you are likely to hook Redfish, Grouper, Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, Sea Trout or Snook.

There is a large selection of places to rent equipment and charter guided fishing opportunities led by Sanibel fishing experts available throughout the islands.

Are Sanibel & Captiva Beaches Dog Friendly?

Dogs are allowed at ALL Sanibel Island beaches! They must be on a leash no longer than 8 feet and be cleaned up after. 

It should be noted that pets are not particularly welcome on Captiva. Dogs are not allowed on South Seas Island Resort beaches as well as Tween Waters Island Resort. When traveling with a furry friend it is best to focus on Sanibel!

Among pet lovers, it is claimed that Algiers Beach/Gulfside City Park. Bowmans Beach and the Sanibel Causeway are the best for dogs.

Shelling on Sanibel & Captiva Beaches

All of Sanibel & Captiva’s Beaches boast a wide variety of shells to be collected! With no one beach outshining the other. 

The best time to start shelling is early morning low tide, be sure to bring the right tools! There will be less competition, and this is when the most shells are scattered amongst the shores!

In your beach bag be sure to bring a mesh bag, scooping tools, and sun protection! In terms of what to look for there is a ton of shells along our Sanibel and Captive shores. The most exciting find is the rare Junonia which can be collected in these areas! 

When enjoying the hunt for gorgeous shells be sure to look out for the Sanibel Six!

If you’re visiting in March be sure to check out the Annual Sanibel Shell Festival, now housed at the Sanibel Community House. This exciting event consists of shell art, crafts, books, live mollusk exhibits, and more!

If you’re in search of a Jewelry Shop, Sanibel and Captiva have a just the place! Choose from Congress Jewelers, The Cedar Chest Fine Jewelry, Lily & Co. Jewelers, and much more all scattered among the islands!

If you’re staying on the Island in search of groceries, household items, or a quick snack on the go Bailey’s General store has it all! There is a slim selection of groceries stores over the Sanibel bridge and Bailey’s takes our top spot every time! 

When To Visit Sanibel & Captiva Beaches

Sanibel and Captiva’s beaches are known for their wonderful weather, forecasting sunny skies and warm weather year round! 

The best time of year to visit Sanibel and Captiva is October through April. These month’s allow for relatively cooler temperatures before the Florida heat takes over in the summer. 

One of South Florida’s best known traits is Sunshine all year round! This makes visiting in the winter months a perfect get away.

While a South Florida summer still boasts all the enjoyable features of Sanibel and Captiva, the high temperatures are less tolerable. The weather can be temperamental as Hurricane season is approaching, taking place June-November.
