Fun & Friendly Atmosphere

Periwinkle Park is a place that guests return to year after year. It’s got a fun, homey atmosphere that is great for anyone of any age. Those who stay at the Sanibel Island camping & RV Park love to socialize and have a good time.

A great example of this is the annual Mardi Gras parade. Everyone gets dressed up and goes crazy, parading all around the park. The event ends with a huge potluck dinner. It became such a staple on the island that now visitors from outside the park aren’t allowed to come because the park just can’t accommodate them. It’s the place people want to be!

Every day, after five in the evening, like-minded guests head over to a wooden gazebo called the 49ers where they share happy hour. The name reflects the number of lots in the RV section of Periwinkle Park.

J.N. “Ding” Darling was a cartoonist and conservationist who once served as head of the US Fish and Wildlife Foundation (when it was known as the US Biological Survey) under President Franklin Roosevelt. He often wintered on Captiva Island and loved the area. His friends and island neighbors appreciated his passion for conservation and raised money to buy land on Sanibel Island to create a refuge. They renamed the park the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge in 1967 in his memory.

If you’re coming to Sanibel Island, bring your own bike or rent a bike. There are 25 miles of bike trails on the island compared to just 12 miles of the main road. You’ll see lots of people pedaling everywhere they need to go, and it’s easy to do on the island. The bike trails are paved and are part of a way to try to encourage people to bike instead of drive so as to conserve the natural beauty of the island. Check out our Biking Guide Of Sanibel.
