The Sanibel Plan

The Sanibel Plan was conceived in 1976 to protect Sanibel from overdevelopment. It has been essential in protecting the island. Sanibel Island has approximately 18 square miles of land. Two-thirds of the land is designated as conservation land. It is owned by the City of Sanibel, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF), and the state of Florida. The plan helps Sanibel control land designation and control how intensely the land is used. The Sanibel community works hard to maintain these strict guidelines to protect this special, sanctuary island. View The Sanibel Plan.
