The U.S. Lighthouse Society is running a DANCE CONTEST to celebrate National Lighthouse Day.

According to the U.S. Lighthouse Society, the idea behind this dance contest is to foster a feeling of community among lighthouse groups, to celebrate what lighthouses mean to all of us, and to simply have FUN!

GUIDELINES for the U.S. Lighthouse Society’s Dance Contest

  1. Choreograph a dance to the original song, Meet Me at the Lighthouse by Joe Rivers.
  2. Anyone can take part
  3. The dance can be performed by one person, up to a large group.
  4. It is recommended that the dance be for the whole duration of the song (about 4 minutes), but it doesn’t have to be. Feel free to use only part of the song.
  5. Take a video of the dance and send it to jeremy@uslhs.org
  6. You can use a camera or a cell phone. If you use a cell phone, please shoot it in landscape mode (horizontal).
  7. The video does not need to be edited or polished. Raw unedited video is fine.
  8. Winning videos will be posted and also submitted videos will be edited into ‘master cuts’ that will be posted on YouTube and other social media.
  9. The U.S. Lighthouse Society will be awarding $1200 in prizes for the best dance videos.
  10. The entries will be judged on creativity by U.S. Lighthouse Society Executive Director Jeff Gales.
  11. First prize is $500, second prize is $250, third prize is $100, and two more winners will get $50 each.
  12. A special prize will be awarded of $250 for the best video featuring children 15 or under.

HISTORY of National Lighthouse Day

National Lighthouse Day 2023 is on August 7 and falls on a Tuesday this year.

Congress approved an Act for the establishment and support of lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and public piers on August 7, 1789 hence National Lighthouse Day is always on August 7.

National Lighthouse Day was first established in 1989 for the bicentennial of the U.S. Lighthouse Service. The Society petitioned Congress to declare National Lighthouse Day on August 7.
