The Birth Of The Mighty Chicken Wing

The birth of chicken wings was entirely accidental. In 1964, Anchor Inn (Buffalo, NY) owner Teressa Bellissimo had mistakenly ordered a box of chicken wings instead of necks (she would use them to make sauce). Wings were considered scrap at the time and were either thrown away or, sold for next to nothing to poor people to make soup. Teressa was angry at her mistake especially as she could not return the wings and was stuck with them. There were too many to make soup so determined to use them one night she fried them and put hot sauce on them, serving them with bleu cheese and celery. She gave them to her son and a group of his friends for a late-night snack and they loved them! She put them on the menu at the inn and the customers flocked to eat them! Soon after others caught on, making their own versions and wings as we know today were born. Thank you Teressa!
