The History Of The Sanibel Post Office

There have been eight versions of the Sanibel post office with the current office on Tarpon Bay Road being the eighth. The first one that can be traced was at the home of Laetitia Ashmore Nutt who was the postmistress from 1889 to 1895. She would collect the post at the Lighthouse Pier. Her home, Gray Gables, is still on the island and is owned by a grand-niece of Laetitia Ashmore Nutt.

George Cooper also collected the mail from Pine Island 1891 – 1895. Cooper was an early homesteader on Sanibel and the historic Cooper House still stands today in the Olde Sanibel Shoppes. It is now a retail store and rumored to be haunted!

Early settler William Reed was postmaster from his front porch and held the position until 1940. His home was destroyed by a hurricane in 1926 and, from debris rescued from the bay, he created the fourth small, one-room post office. You can see a reproduction of the Reed house at the Sanibel Historical Museum & Village. Most of the house is the original house re-created with debris from the original Reed house!

Scotia Bryant ran the fifth post office which was built on Ferry road, but it was too small for the increasing traffic and a sixth building was created on Ferry road which was used until 1964 and then became a private home.

The seventh post office near the Cooper house in Old Sanibel shoppes is now the incredibly popular Over Easy Cafe, an island favorite for breakfast.
