The “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society
The “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society is the official “Friends Of The Refuge” group. It is a non-profit organization developed to support the J.N “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. The society was created to generate independent funds to support the activities and expansion of the refuge. The fund supports programs such as research projects, internships, land acquisition, facility enhancements, staff additions, and public literature. The society was formed in October of 1982. It was becoming clear that, due to rapidly growing interest and popularity, the refuge needed funds to support growth and grow it did. By 1999 the refuge boasted a new visitor & education center and had 280 volunteers. The refuge has since won several prestigious national awards.

Visit The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge
The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is 6,400 Acres of preserved and undeveloped mangrove ecosystem land. It is home to over 245 species of birds, mammals, amphibians, and endangered species. The wildlife refuge was created to protect endangered and threatened creatures. Additionally, it was created to sustain and develop the incredible natural habitat of Sanibel Island. The reserve is a vital support system for the wildlife and a unique element of Sanibel Island quite unlike any other.
