The Historical Island Inn
Traditions On The Beach is part of the historical Island Inn. The Island Inn was established in 1895 by Kentucky natives Will and Harriet (Granny) Matthews. They dreamt of a better life for themselves and their four children and chose this gorgeous waterfront location at the southernmost point of West Gulf Drive beach in part because of the abundance of shells at the location. Granny Matthews was an avid shell collector and the first Shell Fair was held at the inn in 1937. The Annual Shell Fair still takes place to this day every March.
