History

After being homesteaded in 1898, the area that was to become South Seas Island Resort was primarily for growing crops. After a devastating hurricane in 1921 that destroyed the soil, Clarence Chadwick, inventor of the Checkprinter, purchased the land and started a Key Lime Plantation with a salt-resistant lime he created.  The plantation required workers so cottages were developed to house them. In 1942 Bill Hunt and Wesley Kincaid purchased the property and set about creating the resort.
