Captains For Clean Water are a grassroots, non-profit fighting to restore & protect water resources & fix poor water management in Florida. Water mismanagement affects the health of Florida’s estuaries, fisheries, and economy.

About The Fight For Clean Water

Sadly, water mismanagement in Florida has had an adverse effect on three major estuaries that play a key role in the health of the environment. The Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie Rivers are flooded with polluted water from Lake Okeechobee due to industrialized agriculture expansion, led by the sugar industry. Phosphate-laden farm runoff pollutes the lake and, with no other place to go, the polluted water floods the rivers causing huge blooms of toxic blue-green algae. The lack of freshwater is detrimental to the native wildlife and, to drinking water.  Captains For Clean Water was formed in 2016 to heighten public awareness, engage politicians and, research and advance science-based solutions.
