Black Skimmer Island, approximately 1 mile north of the Sanibel Causeway, is an amazing place for sunset and, to watch the incredible birds.

One of the most unique things about Sanibel, Captiva, and the small surrounding islands is the amazing collection of incredible birds. There are several great places to bird watch including the J.N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Refuge and Lighthouse Beach Park but, Black Skimmer Island is one of the best! Take a short boat trip north of the Sanibel Causeway and you will come to the island. It is one of the best places to see sunset and, as the sun sets, you will see more and more birds flying in to nest for the evening. Though there are rare sightings of the islands’ namesake birds, there are many others to admire. This little island is definitely worth a visit.
 
If you do have a boat, the nearest ramps available for public use are the Punta Rassa boat ramp next to the entrance to the Sanibel Causeway. There is another ramp on the Sanibel side of the causeway to the left.
