Check out Podcast #23 where we speak with Captiva Erosion Prevention District (CEPD) Technical Policy Director, Daniel Munt. Captiva Erosion Prevention District (CEPD) is an independent district committed to the beach and shore preservation. One of the most noted people of CEPD is Alison Hagerup who, after dedicating 20 years of her life to CEPD, had her namesake beach dedicated to her. You can visit Alison Hagerup at her resting place near the beach at the Historic Captiva Cemetery.
Over the past 60 years, residents and businesses on Captiva have been working hard to improve and reinforce the health of the Captiva beaches by a series of projects aimed at preventing structural damage to the beach created by any number of factors such as ever-changing tides, wave forces and the 2004/05 hurricane seasons. Captiva’s Beaches have been undergoing some work and a beach nourishment project was started on August 24, 2021. The CEPD has been transporting 750,000 cubic yards of sand from a borrow site located 6 miles offshore to our beaches. That’s nearly 2 billion pounds of sand!. Beginning 6 miles offshore two dredgers are excavating sand off the sea bed. The project is planned to be finished by the end of October. Check out the 2021 Beach Nourishment Project.
